More Reviews!

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends- has that coolest feel of 70s style weirdness, imagry like a cross between the partridge family, or maybe 1970s family fued/Mamma's Family, mixed in with Sid and Marty Krofft... besides, any "kid" cartoon show that can sneak in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood joke is OK in my book...

The Powerpuff Girls- I cant believe that its been so long since Ive checking this show out... Its gotten sooo weird since Ive seen it last, and with so many more in-jokes....

Justice League Unlimited- Ambitious? Yes. Overkill? Maybe. While it is cool to see all the DC characters animated, it does seem to feel a tad watered down at times... Lol, and I love Jeffry Combs as the voice of The Question, playing him off as a sociopathic paranoid conspiracy theorist obcessed with the backstreet boys' connections with the pentagon's interests in the Wal-Mart chain... Something tells me that they're pouring everything they have into a last ditch pull out all the stops effort to revitilize the franchise... and it isnt too bad...

The Wall- Maybe a tad more pretentious and abstract than it needed to be, and often times the songs didnt sound like they were sung with the right emotion (Pink Floyd is as scary and threatening as a braindead hippi)- Ah, yes, and it is hard to take seriously a facist dictator named Pink, and who looks and sounds like Gary Numan.,..

The Passion- The only way that this movie could be more anti-semetic is if it was produced by Henry Ford and directed by Josef Goebbels.

Married with Children season 1- Definitly ahead of its time, but looking back, now by today's standards (as well as knowing how the show is going to evolve)- it seems to be somewhat lacking... it does has its great parts as well as its depressed, regined dark wit, but clearly shows that it has yet to find its footing in the first season...

The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire- Having a show that I used to watch after middle school on Nick-At-Nite, a program that I can still remember airing Mr. Ed, Donna Reed, Laughin, and Dobie Gillis reruns, makes me feel kinda old... Lol, but have I ever missed that show... Well written, great comedy+comedic timing, wonderful acting as well as characters, and also managed to superbly pull off the Fish out of water premise humour- hiphop urban vs. high class wealth without lowering itself by resorting to lowbrow race card humour (like 'Method and Red')... wonderful color nearsighted comedy everyone can enjoy...

You Are Here by Kyle Baker- proof that he actualy IS capable of crafting an organized story- his Don Bluth-ish cartoony style still takes some getting used to (or at least getting used to it being used in a serious-ish setting)- the character foiling and frantic comedy is well done, and it has one of those great endings that is unexpected, but at the same time, is not anti-climatic.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- It does seem to lack the luster that the 1st 2 movies had, and does seem to be getting a tad stale (you'd figure that Potter would be used to living in constant fear of his life)- the best part is that the ending definitly throws one for a loop- maybe a little anti-climatic, but Id rather it be an anti-climatic surprise than an obvious cliche that I would have already figured out from the begining (which the movie was almost in danger of being...)

Taxi Driver- Highly complex movie- great example of what lonliness and isolation can do to an individual- how without love, understanding, forgiveness, and without purpose, bitterness, hate, and wrath can fester and consume unchecked.

Desire hurts, trying to fullfill desire is scary, rejection kills, and being blown off as a sociopath hurts the most, like a malicious stab in the back. Hurt, wounded, and not quite knowing how to deal with his feelings, he turns his bitterness outward, to an evil society, scum, wretches, hypocrites, etc. And the congressman... he who IS the people, seems to e the likely (illogical, but still most likely) embodyment of his enemy, until the driver has a change to meet true evil, taking advantage of true innocense (as opposed to his innosence being betrayed, or actualy, his innosence betraying someone else), and finaly knowing what the real problem of society is, who the real enemy is, and ultimately ends up doing the right thing (or at least the better of two evils, depending on your perspective), and in the end, he comes out the hero, and is even forgiven for his previous transgressions... As he puts the finger to his head and pulls the imaginary trigger, he symbollicaly kills the demon inside, exorcising the bitterness, knowing that he finaly helped someone, and can finaly now come out of his shell.

Oribiter by Warren Ellis- Great SciFi mystery, but seems a little short for a hard cover graphic novel... seems a little incomplete- it would have nice to read on about what was found in outer space, the travels of the ship, etc... But I can also see why it was left out, or better to say, left to the imagination of the reader... it does leave room for a sequal though...

Global Frequency by Warren Ellis- the perfect comic to port to a TV series... as if it were specificaly design for a series of one hour stand alone television shows... and of course, with Warren Ellis' trademark morbid creativity...

Quick Hits....

Here are some quick picks, to prove that Im still dead...

Spider-Man 2- not your typical blockbuster- this movie was AWESOME- great job protraying Parker as the lovable looser, Peter Parker just cant win... And Sure, Doc Ock was a little hokey at times, but the character still had depth... and the ending was GREAT.... definitly one of the best/most fun films of the year

Coffee and Cigarettes- It was great to see Tom Waits pull a joe pesci-from-goodfellas type thing on Iggy Pop, Cate Blanchett satire herself, Alfred Molina portray himself as an obcessive stalker, and Bill Murray hang with the Wu-Tang Clan members...

Ministry- Houses of Mole'- Best album since Psalms- hits hard and fast and doesnt let up for a second.

The Cure- ST- one of their darker/angrier albums... not really as memorable as their earlier works still

PJ Harvey- Uh Huh Her- goes back to the 'Dry' style

Walt Siminson's Thor

The Ultimates by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch- where else can you read captain america yelling "Surrender?!?! YOU THINK THIS 'A' ON MY FOREHEAD STANDS FOR FRANCE?!??!?!!?"

The Battleship Potemkin- Definitly one of the greatest films of all time- even if it is total propaganda

Hazard County Girls- Reminds me of everything great about Babes in Toyland, Hole's Pretty on the Inside, and early L7

hm.... I think thats all for now. Any Questions?

Instructions

Read- Im still reading Atlas Shrugged by Ann Ryand- But books where I actualy have to analyze are hard to read at work and when you only have minimal spare time. For those minimal periods, Im reading Shade the Changing Man by Peter Milligan, and Ultimate Spider-Man vol. 3 by Brian Michael Bendis. Shade sometimes gets a little too weird, and the issues after Chris Bachalo left are not quite as good, but its still a wild ride. Ultimate Spider-Man I still have mixed feelings about. Brian Michael Bendis stretches himself too thin, what with writing something like 14 books a month, and his writing style is almost too recognizable. And he writes peter parker too young, too naive, too angsty. Plus, Im a bit too much of a traditionalist to really get too into the hippper, more modern version of the spidey-mythos. but its still an entertaining read none the less... its still kinda fun to see Bendis' interpetation of the characters, even if it doesnt sit well with me.

Listening- 604 by Ladytron... kinda reminds me what I liked about Elastica: bouncy fun sexy femm britpop. And Oxidizer by Chemlab. Uses alot of elements from East Side Militia, without being too deritive...

Watching- I just finished watching American Splendor- its an interesting biography/documentary about Harvey Pekar, his humble beginings, his humble life, his time on Dave Letterman, his cancer year, etc. Its weird, but his comic writing style is how Ive been wanting to write ever since high school. Now I feel like such a rip off. But none the less, its nice to have something to identify with.

Im also watching sliders every morning before I go to work. Another one of those shows I was really into back when I was in middle school, but drifted away after I went to high school. Although its starting to enter into the season where it starting going into a 'to be continued' ongoing style episodes. I must say that I prefered it when it was just self-contained weird parrell worlds and character study instead of action/suspense. But I think it still has its charms...

there you go. never say I never write in here anymore.

For other news, visit http://www.livejournal.com/users/deathstar461

and what do YOU think?

Nightfall

Dusk. The sun is setting. The day is over, and now the night is here.

Now comes the time for darkness. Now comes the time of cold.

NOW COMES THE TIME OF THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT.

I wish I could hibernate...

The clocks have rolled back, and now it is nighttime. Where life becomes coldest. When we become our most vulnerable... Im worried about how many people will make it through alive this year...

But there is one thing about nights that must not be forgotten. At night, on a clear evening... You can see the stars, you can see the city lights, and when the streets are empty, you can enjoy and apprecciate the sounds of a silent city...

It can be beautiful, if you can take the time to appreciate it...

It is now nightfall. Tuck yourself in with someone close to you to keep warm, sleep tight, see you next spring...

Its time to awaken the nocturnal creatures, the creatures of the night...

Comment in Livejournal

Greg Baum is Dead.

My mother's brother. Dead at 42. More shocking than saddening I suppose. I never really was that close to him (then again, I am not really close with any members of my family.) Just shocking. My aunt found him dead in bed. dead. bed. that rhymes... Cause of death has not yet been determined. All signs point to bloodclot.

That is how another uncle (great-uncle) died back in c. 1984. Both were in the real estate business. Then my great-grandmother died in c. 1986. I am afraid now that my grandparents will die. Them I am closer to, and they both seem to be on death's door.

Its just shocking.

Survied by my aunt who is wheelchair bound due to a mystery illness, my cousins 22, who's been the closest thing to a brother to me (as close as brother's come by my standards anyway), 20, 17, and 12. TWELVE. Can you imagine loosing your father at age TWELVE? Then there is my grandmother, who has never been the most stable of sorts (my mom takes after her you can say...). My uncle has been attending to her bills, and to my grandfather's old property (real estate in the slums, or in the vernacular, a slumlord). But now he's dead, and a giant hole as been left.

I wasnt that close to him at all. But I still feel that giant gap. He was still close family And the shock, of it happening so suddenly. I never saw it coming...

At their house, it was very uncomfortable. A familiar setting, true. But most of the people there were from my aunt's family (a large catholic one at that.) Strangers all. It was like being at a giant party, filled with strangers, but having the guest of honour not show up. At first, people were going on, talking, sharing laughs, etc. And my aunt, alone in her room, crying etc. On one hand, it didnt seem right, people being happy with the loss. But then, it made sense. What better way to drown out the sorrow of loss, than being surrounded by love and loved ones in a time of need?

I begin to wonder about my dad. He is well, but not in the most perfect of health. I am afraid to admit, but I am afraid of loosing him... And my grandfather too... He has been very ill lately as well... One of my closer relatives... he seems to have understood and appreciated how suppressed my childhood was by my mother... etc...

I am afraid... I think my fear of familiar death results from early experiences. When my great-grandmother died, I was 7 or so. The reletives blamed me and the rest of the kids, for running around the house or etc... When I was 13 or so, my other great grandmother dies. I (individuly) was blamed... by my mother. I remember sitting on the bed crying, while she was standing there shouting at me, yelling that if I was there to do more chores around the house, her aorta would never have ruptured... Then there was my grandfather's (my dad's father) death. The wake was so horrible I do not want to recall it on a public forum...

But I suppose I shouldnt be too worried... they'll be hard pressed to pin the blame of this one on me...

I'm hurting... but its more the shock I guess... I do not know if I deserve to state its hurting do to the loss, only the shock of the loss... I do not know...

But I do know this... I am expecting a total lack of support. I should be used to it I suppose, I cannot say that I ever really had it in the past (or if I had, I had been regrettably and shamefuly ignorant of it). Maybe I am too paranoid to let people get closer than arms length... But then again, knowing me, would you WANT to get closer than arms length to me? But then again, Ive learned (the hard way) that it is illegal to issue the invitation. After all, its all lies anyway, everything I do, say, or feel...

Call me asshole, call me liar, call me trouble-maker, bullshit and slander all you want. Spread your goddamned mother fucking feces that fills your life with a pathetic meaning, you fucking cunt. But do it some other day. I dont want to hear it. I have grown-up matters to attend to, and you are not a grown-up matter, or even a grown up for that matter. You are a hobby.

My uncle is dead. And I feel guilty that I did not have a relationship with him. And I do not even know why I did not have one, or even why I feel like I should have had one...

If I needed to tell you my current mood, then I wouldnt be a very good writer, would I?

Onward and Upward

I might be wrong, but I think I may be starting to enjoy work...

The other day, the powers that be decided to take me off the phones early and do floor support for all the bright new trainees. It was nice having not only a sense of power and control, but also to know that I was helping someone feel less overwhelmed on their first days of being bitched at over the phone...

People have always said that I would make a good teacher, which I cannot say that I entirely agree with... I am far too lacking in patience to teach any group anything... but I certainly do not mind one-on-one sessions with people... I suppose thats why Im so interested in librarianship... I do not have to teach anyone, but at least I can provide a gateway to learning for the general public, point them in the right direction, and let them learn for themselves...

The powers that be have also implied that I may be eligible for a promotion to workforce management, which means that I get to sit in a dark office all day, watch stats, and determine how many people we need to work during certain times of the day, etc. Not only would I not have to talk to idiots over phones, but also it would give me pleanty of number and math scenarios to keep my mind sharp. And mostly certainly, I can assume that it would pay better... Oh joy...

I stoped by the library the other day. I still miss the place, actualy. Ive been considering going back, but there is somewhat of a sour history in one or two incidences there. Who knows... maybe its been long enough. But then again, Im not sure if I could work for the same flaming pervert again... But still also, my body may be at T-Mobile, but my heart remains at the Wichita Public Library. They have positions there available too, but also, almost everyone I knew there is gone. All the people I liked have left, and most of the people I disliked are still there. But that for another time, another place I suppose...

lol.. and if Im going to become a pariah because Im the only person in this city who has the guts to stand up for himself and not let himself be pushed around and stabbed in the back, then it is Wichita that is going to loose my respect far before Wichita looses its respect for me...

I love my city... its just the people and the autocrats who run it I hate...

Dont Believe the Hype...

I found a pleasant surprise today in the used CD shops... White Stripe's Elephant and Apocalyptica's Inquisition Symphony. Ive been looking for those CDs FOREVER for a used price (Im avoiding buying used due to my oppostion of the RIAA)

Listen to Seven Nation Army. See if you can spot the irony in the song. Pay attention, there will be a test on this...

"Im not a real asshole, I just play one on TV"

The Fall(en) : Fall Rhythem

I just knew there was a reason why I prefered spring over the fall...

No it wasnt due to the anticipation of summer. Its due to my annual sinus congestion that I suffer every year at about this time. But it was merciful this year. Normaly, it lasts for about a week or longer. This year, only 4 days. Credit that to having a new place to stay and a humidifier.

If I could be addictied to any OTC medication, I think it would be NyQuill. I tried a swig to help me get to sleep a few nights ago (which is NOT easy when you cant breath and have 150 psi in your head). Went out like a light, slept better than I have in YEARS, and woke up light-headed but well-rested. Ill have to get sick more often...

Lol... What was the name of that villian in 1984 that was invented to give an advasary to big brother? The reason why everything was going wrong with Oceaniana? The one who was implicated everytime they caught a spy? The person who really didnt exist? The general scapegoat who was always trying to cause the downfall of an already ruined society?

Next thing you know, they'll be saying that I killed Bambi's mother. That I was the one who stabbed Julius in the back. That Im the one who kissed Jesus. That Im the one who shot JR. That Im the one who planned the hijackings...

"When you ride alone, you ride with Bin Laden"

Fall is a time for music... Every season has its soundtrack.
The birthday party was nice.

Bobby showed up. Friendly person, with admirable loyalty. A bit on the talkative side though. Which is tolerable. Then the old gang from high school showed up. Catching up on old times, bitching about the people we hate and makeing fake threats, drinking and video games. Good times. Just like the good old days. Then they left to go fetch some stuff, leaving me alone for a few mins. Then Brian and Val showed up for a bit, then bigbrother and Alostrael popped by for a few. They managed to get me a copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintaince, a nice defiled copy of the good book, a Bjork DVD single, a MM video classic, and a nice CD... THANKS! It good to give gifts, see the reaction on peoples faces and see if they enjoy them, but its still even better to recieve a gift (no, not in the selfish way, more like in the way that you know that people appreciate you enough to go out of their way to surprise you). Then Josh and Grant from the HS troop returned, Josh gave me a bottle of vodka for my bday, and I loaded everyone up on music book and game loans, then retreated to bed about 5-ish.

Waking up the next morning, I was tired... Plus there was that anxiety of not knowing how to fill your day... I decided to browse the southside flea market, where everything is either bootlegged or stolen (if the RIAA is pissed at online pircay, their heads would EXPLODE if they took a trip to a sleezy flea market sometime). Didnt find anything there, so I went down to target and bought myself an awesome groovy-looking CD rack. Didnt quite need one yet, but it looked so damned cool! Then off to the geek shop for my regular books, included the new Sandman book. Still looking forward to reading it (Ive got so many books on my shelf to read...)

It was about that time that the partying was begining to take its toll on me. I started feeling the early symptoms of a flu: The muscle aches, the sensitivity to light and sound, the fatigue, etc. Started to freak me out, since last winter I somewhat developed something of an aversion to sickness. Its not fun. But I still had to visit my mother for a birthday dinner. Cooked Turkey and potatoes (which is one of the meals I more enjoy)... Over there I ended up getting cloathing from my grandmother (predictable yes, but I needed it), a best buy gift card from my sister (which I used to purchess rated r from Queens of the Stoneage, the new Perfect Circle, and the Miss Kittin album), and well, surprisingly enough, the new David Bowie from my mother as well as a Kansas history book. Mother has never been appreciative of my music tastes, but then again, she may be something of a David Bowie fan as well... What was that term to define the cold war in the 70s... Dentente wasnt it?

As soon as I got home, I hit the bed at about 7. Still kinda feel bad about that... after all, i did have to tape adult swim... but then again, Id rather miss one week of what will be reran later than suffer a day at work with sickness. 15 hours later and I was considerably better.

Yes, the Cruxshadows played here. Yes, it was great, despite everything. Isnt it funny how only 3 people can have the potental of making a good night feel bad? JUST 3 PEOPLE. The good may outnumber the bad, but the bad always seem to outweigh the good. It was great, finaly seeing more people than the over 21 crowd out. Fate was good, and Razorwire Halo (http://www.razorwirehalo.com) definitly stole the show. Then the po-leece came to bust it up. Apparantly, my friend Joe in an act of no-brainess (lol... weed probably got the good parts) yelled the classic battlecry of 'fuck the police'. Right cry, wrong time. Ended up getting him a citation. And they decided that he was drinking underage (when they didnt bother to take a breathalizer or any other test) so they decided to throw all the kids out and fine the owners. That'll teach them dirty pricks to go out and produce something good in this city :-/

Cruxshadows were great too. You gotta love a band that will take the time to go out and mingle with the crowd, assimilate themselves into you, like being a part of the party and scene whereever they go. Not my favorite band, true, but definitly up there in the top 30 or so.

Despite all the challenges, all the outward attempts to make me unwelcome in my own ciy, I had fun. And dont worry, I will still be making regular appearances in the city. Just you wait and see.

Its another new year for me. 22. Nothing to look forward to except getting older. I remember I would often pass a business sign which would say "2003 will be better" In some ways it was, in some ways it was not. But ultimatly, that is all we can tell ourselves to help us keep on going.

"We must go on, though we bleed..."

And I will be with you, every step of the way, for good or bad...

Comment in Livejournal

Its the Most Wonderful Time of The Year...

Summer is dead. Fall is here.

I always loved the fall. Fall and spring, when nature was the most colorful. Sure, the colors were there in the summer, but it was just too damned hot to enjoy them. The fall, the trees are on fire, the nights are cool, and you can actualy HEAR the night.

Oh, and of course the holidays. Aside from my birthday, there was also halloween and thanksgiving. Great times to look forward to seeing people, having fun, and getting free stuff.

And so many great things have happened in the fall. I met Camilla in the fall. I met Tracy in the fall. I met Ashley in the fall. I started my 2nd job at the public library in the fall. I started school in the fall. Among other things...

Fall is a break in between the extremes of summer and winter. Giving you just enough time to be able to comfortable go outside, take walks, open the windows and let out the stale air, and enjoy life.

No matter how horrible it, or the people who occupy it, may seem.

What makes this fall extra special this year is that it will be the first time I have my own place on halloween, which means I get to hand out candy to the kiddies this year. For some strange reason, I always wanted to do that :)

Tomarrow I will be 22. I remember last year I was so excited to be 21. Now I know that it was all hype, not really that worth it.

Well... ALMOST not worth it...

"They only like you when you're 17
When you're 21, or no fun
They take a polaroid and let you go
So they'll let you know, so come on"

The party is about to begin, so I am off

"Last year I was 21
I didnt have alot of fun
Now Im going to be 22
Oh my, oh boo hoo

Now Im going to be 22
Im not going to have alot to do"

Want to know how to make it big in the big little city?

Follow these steps.

1. Never take a stand for what is right, unless that stand is against something a good hundred miles away in Washington. No NIMBYs here damnit.

2. Always smile on the outside, give the fake kisses on each cheek, and pretend you like your fellow person. All the while on the inside, stick out your tounge, give them the finger, and hate for the most insignificant reasons.

3. Thou shalt have no gods before___

4. Honesty is the worst policy

5. Any criticism will be seen as an insult, and treated accordingly.

6. "There's room at the top and Im telling you still, 1st you must learn how to smile as you kill."

7. If you are too willfull to be a bitch, then there is no room for you here. You are of no use to anyone.

8. Words speak louder than actions. Talk the talk, but dont you DARE walk the walk.

9. If you have an opinion that is different than what is decided to be the majority, dont you EVER let it out of your head. Go somewhere else for that garbage.

10. Shoot first, but dont bother asking questions later. Strictly prohibited.

11. Communication is prohibited as well. Do not speak unless spoken to by a superior

Did I forget anything?

This is not sarcasm. This is satire. Ooops... there I go, violating the most sacred rule of Wichita...

THAT being sarcastic.

Now Im a mass murderer. Who knew that people were so frightened and threatened by thoughts and opinions?

Or truth for that matter. But hey, truth hurts. Thats why we hate it so much, especialy when it is unflattering...

rule 5: Any criticism will be seen as an insult, and treated accordingly.

Its a tough job being me. But someone has to do it. But at least Im being me, and being someone else... Which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for the rest of you...

Comment in LiveJournal.
Declairation of War

From Winston Churchill- c.1940

When, a week ago today, I asked the House to fix this afternoon as the occasion for a statement, I feared it would be my hard lot to announce the greatest military disaster in our long history. I thought-and some good judges agreed with me-that perhaps 20,000 or 30,000 men might be re-embarked. But it certainly seemed that the whole of the French First Army and the whole of the British Expeditionary Force north of the Amiens-Abbeville gap would be broken up in the open field or else would have to capitulate for lack of food and ammunition. These were the hard and heavy tidings for which I called upon the House and the nation to prepare themselves a week ago. The whole root and core and brain of the British Army, on which and around which we were to build, and are to build, the great British Armies in the later years of the war, seemed about to perish upon the field or to be led into an ignominious and starving captivity.

That was the prospect a week ago. But another blow which might well have proved final was yet to fall upon us. The King of the Belgians had called upon us to come to his aid. Had not this Ruler and his Government severed themselves from the Allies, who rescued their country from extinction in the late war, and had they not sought refuge in what was proved to be a fatal neutrality, the French and British Armies might well at the outset have saved not only Belgium but perhaps even Poland. Yet at the last moment, when Belgium was already invaded, King Leopold called upon us to come to his aid, and even at the last moment we came. He and his brave, efficient Army, nearly half a million strong, guarded our left flank and thus kept open our only line of retreat to the sea. Suddenly, without prior consultation, with the least possible notice, without the advice of his Ministers and upon his own personal act, he sent a plenipotentiary to the German Command, surrendered his Army, and exposed our whole flank and means of retreat.

I asked the House a week ago to suspend its judgment because the facts were not clear, but I do not feel that any reason now exists why we should not form our own opinions upon this pitiful episode. The surrender of the Belgian Army compelled the British at the shortest notice to cover a flank to the sea more than 30 miles in length. Otherwise all would have been cut off, and all would have shared the fate to which King Leopold had condemned the finest Army his country had ever formed. So in doing this and in exposing this flank, as anyone who followed the operations on the map will see, contact was lost between the British and two out of the three corps forming the First French Army, who were still farther from the coast than we were, and it seemed impossible that any large number of Allied troops could reach the coast.

The enemy attacked on all sides with great strength and fierceness, and their main power, the power of their far more numerous Air Force, was thrown into the battle or else concentrated upon Dunkirk and the beaches. Pressing in upon the narrow exit, both from the east and from the west, the enemy began to fire with cannon upon the beaches by which alone the shipping could approach or depart. They sowed magnetic mines in the channels and seas; they sent repeated waves of hostile aircraft, sometimes more than a hundred strong in one formation, to cast their bombs upon the single pier that remained, and upon the sand dunes upon which the troops had their eyes for shelter.... For four or five days an intense struggle reigned. All their armored divisions-or what Was left of them-together with great masses of infantry and artillery, hurled themselves in vain upon the ever-narrowing, ever-contracting appendix within which the British and French Armies fought.

... Nor were the seas, as I have said, themselves free from mines and torpedoes. It was in conditions such as these that our men carried on, with little or no rest, for days and nights on end, making trip after trip across the dangerous waters, bringing with them always men whom they had rescued. The numbers they have brought back are the measure of their devotion and their courage. The hospital ships, which brought off many thousands of British and French wounded, being so plainly marked were a special target for Nazi bombs; but the men and women on board them never faltered in their duty.

Meanwhile, the Royal Air Force, which had already been intervening in the battle, so far as its range would allow, from home bases, now used part of its main metropolitan fighter strength, and struck at the German bombers and at the fighters which in large numbers protected them. This struggle was protracted and fierce. Suddenly the scene has cleared, the crash and thunder has for the moment-but only for the moment-died away. A miracle of deliverance, achieved by valor, by perseverance, by perfect discipline, by faultless service, by resource, by skill, by unconquerable fidelity, is manifest to us all. The enemy was hurled back by the retreating British and French troops. He was so roughly handled that he did not hurry their departure seriously. The Royal Air Force engaged the main strength of the German Air Force, and inflicted upon them losses of at least four to one; and the Navy, using nearly 1,000 ships of all kinds, carried over 335,000 men, French and British, out of the jaws of death and shame, to their native land and to the tasks which lie immediately ahead. We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted. It was gained by the Air Force. Many of our soldiers coming back have not seen the Air Force at work; they saw only the bombers which escaped its protective attack. They underrate its achievements. I have heard much talk of this; that is why I go out of my way to say this. I will tell you about it.

This was a great trial of strength between the British and German Air Forces. Can you conceive a greater objective for the Germans in the air than to make evacuation from these beaches impossible, and to sink all these ships which were displayed, almost to the extent of thousands? Could there have been an objective of greater military importance and significance for the whole purpose of the war than this? They tried hard, and they were beaten back; they were frustrated in their task. We got the Army away; and they have paid fourfold for any losses which they have inflicted. Very large formations of German aeroplanes-and we know that they are a very brave race-have turned on several occasions from the attack of one-quarter of their number of the Royal Air Force, and have dispersed in different directions. Twelve aeroplanes have been hunted by two. One aeroplane was driven into the water and cast away by the mere charge of a British aeroplane, which had no more ammunition. All of our types-the Hurricane, the Spitfire and the new Defiant-and all our pilots have been vindicated as superior to what they have at present to face.

When we consider how much greater would be our advantage in defending the air above this Island against an overseas attack, I must say that I find in these facts a sure basis upon which practical and reassuring thoughts may rest. I will pay my tribute to these young airmen. The great French Army was very largely, for the time being, cast back and disturbed by the onrush of a few thousands of armored vehicles. May it not also be that the cause of civilization itself will be defended by the skill and devotion of a few thousand airmen? There never has been, I suppose, in all the world, in all the history of war, such an opportunity for youth. The Knights of the Round Table, the Crusaders, all fall back into the past-not only distant but prosaic; these young men, going forth every morn to guard their native land and all that we stand for, holding in their hands these instruments of colossal and shattering power, of whom it may be said that every morn brought forth a noble chance and every chance brought forth a noble knight, deserve our gratitude, as do all the brave men who, in so many ways and on so many occasions, are ready, and continue ready to give life and all for their native land.

I return to the Army. In the long series of very fierce battles, now on this front, now on that, fighting on three fronts at once, battles fought by two or three divisions against an equal or somewhat larger number of the enemy, and fought fiercely on some of the old grounds that so many of us knew so well-in these battles our losses in men have exceeded 30,000 killed, wounded and missing. I take occasion to express the sympathy of the House to all who have suffered bereavement or who are still anxious.... But I will say this about the missing: We have had a large number of wounded come home safely to this country, but I would say about the missing that there may be very many reported missing who will come back home, some day, in one way or another. In the confusion of this fight it is inevitable that many have been left in positions where honor required no further resistance from them.

Against this loss of over 30,000 men, we can set a far heavier loss certainly inflicted upon the enemy. But our losses in material are enormous. We have perhaps lost one-third of the men we lost in the opening days of the battle of 21st March, 1918, but we have lost nearly as many guns -- nearly one thousand-and all our transport, all the armored vehicles that were with the Army in the north. This loss will impose a further delay on the expansion of our military strength. That expansion had not been proceeding as far as we had hoped. The best of all we had to give had gone to the British Expeditionary Force, and although they had not the numbers of tanks and some articles of equipment which were desirable, they were a very well and finely equipped Army. They had the first-fruits of all that our industry had to give, and that is gone. And now here is this further delay. How long it will be, how long it will last, depends upon the exertions which we make in this Island. An effort the like of which has never been seen in our records is now being made. Work is proceeding everywhere, night and day, Sundays and week days. Capital and Labor have cast aside their interests, rights, and customs and put them into the common stock. Already the flow of munitions has leaped forward. There is no reason why we should not in a few months overtake the sudden and serious loss that has come upon us, without retarding the development of our general program.

Nevertheless, our thankfulness at the escape of our Army and so many men, whose loved ones have passed through an agonizing week, must not blind us to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium is a colossal military disaster. The French Army has been weakened, the Belgian Army has been lost, a large part of those fortified lines upon which so much faith had been reposed is gone, many valuable mining districts and factories have passed into the enemy's possession, the whole of the Channel ports are in his hands, with all the tragic consequences that follow from that, and we must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately at us or at France. We are told that Herr Hitler has a plan for invading the British Isles. This has often been thought of before. When Napoleon lay at Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army, he was told by someone. "There are bitter weeds in England." There are certainly a great many more of them since the British Expeditionary Force returned.

The whole question of home defense against invasion is, of course, powerfully affected by the fact that we have for the time being in this Island incomparably more powerful military forces than we have ever had at any moment in this war or the last. But this will not continue. We shall not be content with a defensive war. We have our duty to our Ally. We have to reconstitute and build up the British Expeditionary Force once again, under its gallant Commander-in-Chief, Lord Gort. All this is in train; but in the interval we must put our defenses in this Island into such a high state of organization that the fewest possible numbers will be required to give effective security and that the largest possible potential of offensive effort may be realized. On this we are now engaged. It will be very convenient, if it be the desire of the House, to enter upon this subject in a secret Session. Not that the government would necessarily be able to reveal in very great detail military secrets, but we like to have our discussions free, without the restraint imposed by the fact that they will be read the next day by the enemy; and the Government would benefit by views freely expressed in all parts of the House by Members with their knowledge of so many different parts of the country. I understand that some request is to be made upon this subject, which will be readily acceded to by His Majesty's Government.

We have found it necessary to take measures of increasing stringency, not only against enemy aliens and suspicious characters of other nationalities, but also against British subjects who may become a danger or a nuisance should the war be transported to the United Kingdom. I know there are a great many people affected by the orders which we have made who are the passionate enemies of Nazi Germany. I am very sorry for them, but we cannot, at the present time and under the present stress, draw all the distinctions which we should like to do. If parachute landings were attempted and fierce fighting attendant upon them followed, these unfortunate people would be far better out of the way, for their own sakes as well as for ours. There is, however, another class, for which I feel not the slightest sympathy. Parliament has given us the powers to put down Fifth Column activities with a strong hand, and we shall use those powers subject to the supervision and correction of the House, without the slightest hesitation until we are satisfied, and more than satisfied, that this malignancy in our midst has been effectively stamped out.

Turning once again, and this time more generally, to the question of invasion, I would observe that there has never been a period in all these long centuries of which we boast when an absolute guarantee against invasion, still less against serious raids, could have been given to our people. In the days of Napoleon the same wind which would have carried his transports across the Channel might have driven away the blockading fleet. There was always the chance, and it is that chance which has excited and befooled the imaginations of many Continental tyrants. Many are the tales that are told. We are assured that novel methods will be adopted, and when we see the originality of malice, the ingenuity of aggression, which our enemy displays, we may certainly prepare ourselves for every kind of novel stratagem and every kind of brutal and treacherous maneuver. I think that no idea is so outlandish that it should not be considered and viewed with a searching, but at the same time, I hope, with a steady eye. We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised.

I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

Oh yes, and my birthday is approaching.
Forget the 911 conspiracies... there have been too many dead celebrities this year...

Lets see, who have we got so far...

Johnny Cash
June Carter- very romantic

John Ritter- Died before his time

Idi Amin- The only uncovicted tyrant-cannible

Strom Thurmond- FINALY

Leni Rheinstenfhal (sp?)- She aint got nuttn to apologize for! (seriously)

Bob Hope- "Bob is our jesus. christ is our hope. jesus christ is our bob hope." jesus christ is dead. RIP

Joe Conklin- a kooky local celebrity, known for his lovable cornball jokes in his car ads

Charles Bronson

Ol' Mike- The guy who brought real country to the radio

Gregory Peck- The *real* old hickory

Kathryn Hepburn- Rally Dahling

Im sure there's more... just cant remember them all...
And there will be more to come Im sure. Seems to be the year for dieing. Looks like some relatives are next...

Dad and I never really saw eye to eye on music, but Johnny Cash was one of those things that bridged the generation gap. Honest, real country folk music as opposed to the watered down pop country.

Lol... for the longest time, Nine Inch Nails was praticaly the only band he specificaly forbade me from listening to (half jokingly though)... he praticaly shit a brick when I told him about the cover on the last Cash album (half jokingly of course)

A full life with good closure... Its almost romantic, him joining his beloved wife so soon after her own death..

As for Ritter... THAT came as a shock... he seemed so young and healthy... Who knew that Don Knotts would outlive him? Johnny Cash's death was enough to grab my attention this morning, but Ritter's is what slapped me in the face... two deaths in one day, one expected, one not...

I always know him better for his roles in Stay Tuned and Problem Child...

Its the changing of the times. One left us at his time. The other left us too soon...

Work is pissing me off. I needed time off for a family reunion, so I submitted my request about 3 weeks ago. Not only do they not give it to me, they bitch me out for asking for it. Mostly because I had to call in last week because my car was broken into. CD gone, and rear window shattered. But on the plus side, they left my CDs, and they took the player with the least amount of collateral damage possible. A real professional job. I did have to take the day off to have the damage appraised, and find the replacements. By the time I found a window, all the glass shops were closed. They all close at 6:00, and I dont get off work until 6:30. And they wont even give me an hour to get it fixed. And once again, they bitch me out for asking... grrr.... At least the pay is good. But from what it looks like, Im going to get my schedule shuffled around *again*- sticking me with a different supervisor, and a different schedule.

That's All for Now Folks...

Post Comment in Livejournal
